“The FCC found routine to be indecent by that standard and put what amounted to a warning in WBAI’s license file.” (Carlin 171). The radio station that played the bit was called WBAI and was owned by the Pacifica Foundation. The man wrote a letter to the FCC in which he complained about hearing that sort of language on the radio. This was the bit that was heard on a New York radio broadcast by a man and his fifteen year old son. In retaliation to the government, he released a sequel bit on his next album, titled “Filthy Words”. The complaint of obscenity was later dismissed by the Judge because although “he had no doubt indecent language was used, he didn’t believe anyone was violently aroused” (Carlin 168). In 1972 Carlin performed the bit (“Seven Words”) live in Milwaukee…and was arrested immediately afterwards.
It is ironic that the bit was called “Seven Things You Can Never Say on Television” because at the time there was no written law saying so it wasn’t until later in which there was a legitimate form of censorship on public broadcasts. Class Clown was released in 1972 and won the Grammy for best comedy album.

Four months after FM & AM was released, Carlin recorded his most famous album Class Clown. As times change, the comedy changes with it. That’s how comedy, for the most part, works. His album FM & AM addressed “the feeling that something freer and fresher was emerging from the violence and confusion of the sixties” (Carlin 158). Carlin himself knew he was changing the norm for comedy.
